Beta, maybe, but, not too bad. Interface looks a bit.. large and takes up quite a bit of space. And it causes iTunes to stutter (WTH?!?! Nothing ever causes iTunes to stutter...).

Goddess, the zooming out, flying, and zooming back in is awesome.

Note to self: Get GPS location of home. Apartment, for later reference is: 40º 6.718 N 88º 13.128' W

I'm wondering how long it'll be until non-liscensed versions of GEarth come out (specifically, losing Google Earth is one of my apprehensions keeping me from going full-Linux). With the app-equivilant of browser spoofing, I can't imagine it'd be really difficult. Google has all the data that really matters hosted publicly; all someone has to do is build an engine to render it.

Mmm, but the question is, the data's probably going through some other port/protocol... at least for the mac version, there was a notice of "streaming" along with a percentage next to it. And there doesn't appear to be any of the loading-in-blocks that you occasionally see in the browser based version.

Still, I guess, once you save those packets, and reverse-engineer them, you could write your own client... I'm not too sure what linux has, in terms of a graphics rendering engine, but I'm pretty sure there's enough stuff there...

...maybe a combination of some open-source 3D gaming engine (Quake/Unreal tourny?) Imagine being able to fly around the world like that......
