Ah, the joys of perl and HP printers....
Came across this old gem:

In short, there's a small perl script that will talk to your HP printer and allow you to set a custom "Ready Message".
So examples include:
- Insert Coin
- Out of Cheese
- Your print request was deemed unworthy of my time
- Remove squirrel in tray
