What genre are you looking for? Or do you just want to hear lists of favorite books? Oh, also, is the assignment just one book or generalizing within similarities / author?
I like Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five. Both have some surface science fiction but are really about more than that. (In his later works, Vonnegut discarded the science aspect and just stuck with what he really meant to say in the first place.) One positive: both novels are fairly short, 200-350 pages.
