If anyone ever needs to bypass their school/business/government filters, something there should do the trick. The one that was at darwin.servehttp.com is down, and probably will remain down.
In this case, these proxies "run" in your browser. So loading up one of them will bring you to a page that asks for a destination URL. Fill that in, and it'll load up the page you want, but masking information as necessary. For example, if work/whatnot blocks yahoo.com to keep you from checking your e-mail, you could go to, say, http://www.blockmy.info/, type in http://www.yahoo.com/ and log into your e-mail to check e-mail there.
Now, this doesn't always work, 'cause stuff get's broken... I tried writing my own some years ago to get through the school blocking services, but it was only partially successful. (either livejournal or gmail remained broken, I forget which.)
-- Sometimes, you'll get a proxy as: proxy.somewhere.net:8080
In that case, it's a proxy server, and that needs to be configured through your internet settings (eh, options of your browser, typically, under advanced options), and add the server (stuff before ":", proxy.somewhere.net in this case) and the port (after ":", 8080 in this case)... I used to run one of these too, but you have to connect to my computer via ssh (secure shell) first......
-- Essentially, the basic idea behind them is that instead of: Your computer -[some destination you're not supposed to go to]-> evil blocking network/firewall/gateway Your computer <-["HAH, you're not allowed to go there"]- evil blocking gateway
it'd be more like; Your computer -[proxy[some destination you're not supposed to go to]]-> evil blocking network/firewall/gateway -> proxy -[some destination you're not supposed to go to]-> internet Your computer <-[requested data]- evil blocking gateway <- proxy <-[data]- internet
Hum. Wanna try using Azureus instead? I can actually parse the logs for you and tell you why it's not working... (BitTorrent probably has logs, but I don't know where to tell you to go to find them, nor do I know the interface well enough to help troubleshoot...)
yep, if you downloaded the torrent files and saved them somewhere (mmm, so maybe you'll have a file named "such-and-such.torrent" sitting on your desktop..)
Heh. Yeah, sounds more or less about right, although it depends on the torrent. Took me about 2 days for 4 GB... What are you downloading, if I might be curious?
And there's a few things that might make it a bit faster... Poking a hole in the firewall on your computer helps, and turning on UPnP (Universal Plug 'n Play) support on your router/gateway also helps. Also, it always starts out a bit slower, 'cause it takes time for people to connect to you...
I don't really know how to mangle the firewall appropriately, so I don't think I'll be messing with that.
And it's the Stargate movie, though if I can get this to work, I'll be downloading the rest of s9, too. Then I'll probably burn all of it to CD to get it off my hard drive.
