Friends-Of.
Mar. 4th, 2004 07:17 pmPersonally, I don't think this is an issue at all, but apparently, it is. And I know there are people out there who compulsively check their friends vs. friends-of lists, and although I admit I think they're silly, I don't think any less of them for it. It's like me and collecting anime, for the pointlessness of it all.
So, the issue being debated is: Should users be allowed to "edit" their friends-of list?

:D if you don't want to think, go read [ link 1 | http://www.livejournal.com/users/sparklescamp/255477.html ] and [ link 2 | http://www.livejournal.com/community/lj_biz/217808.html?thread=4596688#t4596688 ] and agree with them. Then copy and paste them into the poll and vote not to change it (first option).
Background:
- Friends-of lists the people who list you as friends. Unless you list them as friends, they will not see non-public posts. Currently, one can hide the Friends-of list, if it bothers people.
The issues so far:
- People are bothered when they see that they are the friend of "LOT_OF_ANIMAL_SEX" or something stupid like that that someone made up to annoy aforementioned People with.
- People want to remove those people they hate.
- People fear stalkers.
My points/points I agree with:
- It doesn't matter. Just because they list you as their friend, doesn't mean you are their friend. People need to understand this, and it should be explained to them.
- Changing it will result in even more problems... there are problems enough caused by the friends list... now people will start checking their friends to make sure they're listed, etc. OCD.

Date: 2004-03-05 01:00 pm (UTC)"tend to work through communities or their friends-friends." - sorry, ...tend to find friends though... might make more sense. And friends-friends=friend's friends.
Hm, not assuming that people who find your journal are part of the LJ community...
It's more that my userinfo page is my userinfo page.?
Trust level for pictures (userpics?)... Like the security setting for posts? That'd be rather hard to impliment, though... And it would bother some people, because there's bound to be a number of people who would use that feature, then use a "private" or "friends-only" userpic on a public post, then complain to Abuse and Support that their userpic isn't showing up. And the server would need to check each userpic's security level, on every request... more hits to the database=more delay. And each userpic would require a security level appended to it, which would mean a major database change, considering how things are now... And there's probably other things I haven't thought of yet. Not to say that it can't be done- it could probably easily be done and it would be a cool feature. Perhaps you should try submitting that as a feature request to The suggestion box.
Oh, hm, seems like people-up-high have made some kind of decision... it's been changed to "Read / Trusted by:"...
Hope I made some kind of sense up there.. =.=;; didn't get a lot of sleep last night because I was up late studying for math.
[more or less random]Hey, look, you only live 30-1h away from me... somehow, it feels so weird to be 'talking' to a complete stranger who live only a hour max away...[/random-ish]

Date: 2004-03-05 03:15 pm (UTC)Say someone has a default picture that doesn't show her face and some other pictures that do. She may choose to use the pictures that do mostly when she comments in other people's journals.
It would be nice to make it so that if someone goes to the userpics page those people not on her friends list can't see what she looks like, but instead see that there are a couple of screened pictures.
Re finding friends through communities vs friends of friends... it usually happens within the comments or reading someone else's friendslist, rather than the "read by" list, as far as I can tell.
Yep. I'll be in Rockville for dancing at Timpano's on the 3rd Thursday of the month.
