Hmmm, thoughts. I don't like it very much. It idea is cool, but you know, it would slow me down. Unless you can combine some nicer keyboard command based search/locate with that... And our current technology doesn't quite support it. Yes, there are tablet PCs, but using a pen to do this? Ehhhhh. Gonna be a bit awkward. A standalone tablet would be even worse.

Of course, I don't manage that many files on a daily basis; more art inclined people might find it more useful: imagine being able to play with images that way, and find the one you want at quick glance. No more naming of files~ just spread them out and find the image you want.

What I want is a desktop that fully supports touch-based window dragging. The prereqs of that, though, is either a big screen, or 3D sensitive space, so you can throw windows to the back, and pull them forwards, throw them off to the side, etc.

And hand gestures. Pointers wouldn't work well enough, being 2D... Imagine... conducting... combined with system manipulation... Of course, most people probably wouldn't need something that fancy; but coders, artists, system ops, etc. would probably benefit quite a bit. Gods, one can dream. =^_^=

We were checking it out on irc and consensus is pretty much the same. Looks cool, but seems like most time on the computer is spent operating apps, not finding or organizing files.

That brings up another concern which is apps. How do you find a file from within an app? Does that desktop come back up? How big a context switch is that from the app?

You're right about visual art people, though. It'd be a boon to them. As for musicians.. er.. can you imagine what the equivalent audible desktop would sound like? Oof.

Mmm. I think a decent way to handle apps would be to have them appear in the center of the screen. Manipulation to data would happen there, and when you don't need it, shrink the window and shove it to the side. So you remain on the "desktop", just like how you would if you were working with real materials. Throw in the normal hot-keys to minimize to icon, and it wouldn't be too bad. Or better yet, scrap the idea of applications altogether and have plugins that would handle various file formats, allowing viewing and editing as necessary. (Of course, you'll have games and such, so it'd be hard to escape the concept of other processes... and... I dunno. Maybe that might not work after all.)

Hehe, an audible desktop. A full surround sound system, and depending on where you move your cursor, audio from a certain file gets louder. Like walking in a forest of small radios or something.. 'cept that's probably not how musicians would be used to composing music....
