Why are the Japanese recordings colorful?

From what I understand, they have different casts that rotate, so each cast gets its own recording? I think Red and Blue were recorded in 1994, and the remaining 4 (Light blue, green, purple/violet, and orange) were recorded in 2003. Annoyingly enough, I appear not to have the blue... may rectify that, maybe.
